BBVA API Market

Tourism is a highly innovative sector, and APIs are the perfect allies for improving the customer experience for different types of travelers. Below are some examples and success stories involving APIs in the world of travel.

Liverpool airport and the Skyscanner API

To make it easier to look for flights, Liverpool’s John Lennon airport (LJLA) connects the search engine on its website with that of the Skyscanner API so passengers can see the comparative data on this platform and find the best available prices for their flights.

Alaska Airlines: Innovation at the Edge

Alaska Airlines was one of the first to develop an iPhone app to allow users to access their boarding passes, a system which today has been copied by numerous airline companies. But it then went one step further and incorporated an API as part of an initiative they call “Innovation at the Edge”, for the purpose of developing applications that offer added value to their users and employees.

Lyft and the Google Maps APIs

Lyft is a private transport service based in San Francisco and operating in 40 American states. Its aim is to improve mobility and offer competitive prices. It uses Google Maps APIs to connect passengers and drivers in a simple way. The company is aware that Google is essential to its business model, and describes them as key partners who have played a role in its success.

Suggestions for group travel, baggage-free tourism and other innovative ideas for the future

Some months ago, BBVA API_Market took part in “Hackatrips”, an event organized by minube and Fitur.

Over 80 programmers and designers in this hackathon worked with APIs from BBVA, Oracle, HotelsCombined and minube, looking for disruptive ideas with which to resolve the challenges facing the tourist sector.

The first of the prizes awarded went to the Traveler Soul initiative, an app that made use of the APIs of all the participating companies to enable users to “enjoy the best experiences” in the places they travel to without the need to carry their baggage around with them.

For its part, BBVA recognized the creators of Grupa, an app that proposes the creation of user profiles based on their commercial behavior derived from the credit card spending data that (with prior consent) they cede to the app for analysis. This segmentation is then used to find similar profiles to suggest group travel experiences.
